Succulents have been popular for weddings for the last several years. There are a variety that work well in both centerpiece and bouquets designs. I thought I would show you how you can keep these plants growing after the wedding.
Nicole's bouquet, pictured above, included several soft green succulents known as echeveria, and the lantern centerpiece design had several different types of sedums, "hens and chicks" Sempervivum, and graptosedum nestled among the flowers and herbs.

I think it's great that these little succulents can be removed after the wedding and actually rooted and grown into thriving plants.
The picture above shows a nice variety that were plucked from some recent designs. The lower part of the stem was stripped and then pushed into moist potting soil.
There's not much else that needs to be done. Just check to make sure the soil stays moist, but not soggy and within a few weeks the stems will begin to put on roots.
Pictured above are some succulents that I saved and rooted for one of my brides. This is about seven weeks after the wedding.
The next step is to move these plants to a larger pot or to a well drained area in the garden that receives about 4-5 hours of sunlight. In our area (Raleigh, NC), they will benefit from  a little shade during the hottest part of the day.
I like to keep the different varieties separated because some are more vigorous than others and will overtake the pot or area where they are planted.  The echeveria will need to come indoors and be placed near a bright sunny window once the temperatures get cold since it is not winter hardy.  Be sure that all plants are provided a well drained planting area as wet soils will cause them to rot.
Send me an email if you have any questions!

The lush fragrant blooms of peonies are some of the most romantic flowers for May weddings.
And Nicole thought they would be perfect in her wedding bouquet. Feathery plumes of astilbe,  Sahara roses, Majolica spray roses and stock brought in the soft pink, blush and ivory color palette that she was looking for, and echeveria in a soft mint green added rich texture.
Echeveria and other succulents add a keepsake touch to wedding designs as they can be removed from the bouquet after the wedding,  and planted for later enjoyment.
Chantilly snapdragons from the garden added a wonderful soft pink to the bridesmaids' bouquet.
And a collar of Dusty Miller and pittosporum completed the designs.
It's always a privilege to create lovely floral designs for a couple's wedding, but one of most special aspects is getting to know the couple. Nicole and Jeff and I started this process a year ago and through emails and visits I have so enjoyed getting to know these two. I am very excited for them as they begin their married journey!!!

They're coming home tonight from their honeymoon- home to a new way of life- my daughter, Mary, and her husband, Brad, are now newlyweds!

So many folks were involved in helping pull things together for their wedding- friends, brothers, aunts and uncles...
Brad's Mom, Terry, put together a WONDERFUL dessert table with 500 individual, homemade, very yummy little cheesecakes- they were incredible!!!
Wilson was the behind the scenes man, setting up the arbor for the ceremony and making OODLES of wooden boxes for centerpiece designs.
I even had boutonniere help from Mary's sister, Natalie, and of course my friend, Sandy, came over to help with the flowers as well.
The flowers.. Mary would send me a link or put images on Pinterest to give me ideas of what she and Brad liked. Soft muted colors, her favorite flower- Amnesia roses, and to humor me- something from my gardens. I joked with her last April... "I'm planting these Cafe Au Lait Dahlias just for your bouquet..."
I was so excited the Lord gave me some beautiful blooms to pick from !
Brad and Mary wanted to use succulents for the boutonnieres. Here are a couple of images of Natalie's creations.

We used Wilson's wooden boxes for many of the centerpiece designs.
And filled them with Amnesia roses, eucalyptus, Majolica spray roses, hydrangeas and wax flowers.
A great "do ahead" were some of the small wooden boxes filled with succulents.
Hopefully some of these babies will keep on growing in their new potted homes.
All in all it was a crazy, wonderful time.
And now the new chapter is about to begin... Brad and Mary, I am praying God's blessing for you as you begin your wedded life... Love, Mom

Today is Rachel and Jacob's wedding day!
Yesterday I sent bouquets and corsages and boutonnieres and buckets of flowers to Boone with her friend, Mary (who created the centerpiece designs). And today these two joined their lives together as husband and wife!
Rachel, her Mom, Cheryl and I talked flowers over the summer.  Rachel's vision was one of crisp greens and whites. Vendela roses and Majolica spray roses were nestled among  baby green hydrangeas and bright green button mums. There were also soft willowy heads of Queen Anne's Lace and emerald green Cleyera Japonica leaves. Everything looked so lovely and fresh. I have been babying some succulents this summer- aka "Hens and Chicks" and was glad to have a nice size one to tuck into Rachel's bouquet.
For her sister, Sarah, who was her Matron of Honor, (so sorry I used the wrong tag!), there were splashes of purple tradescantia and crested celosia.
What a privilege it has been to create these bouquets and such for this sweet, young bride. I am really looking forward to seeing Rachel and hearing all about her wedding day, and I can't wait to meet her new husband, Jacob!!!
Praying God's blessing for you two as you start this wonderful marriage journey!
