Sometimes the floral consultation is the very first time a couple really thinks about flowers for their wedding day.

In the case of Shawna and Steve, our first meeting happened after months of correspondence. And ideas that had started out shadowy and vague, had become strong and definitive. Their vision would combine flowers, foliage and vines  into  woodsy and elegant designs that would complement an intimate backyard setting for the wedding and reception.

And now it's so rewarding to see the reality of that vision in these stunning images taken by Rebecca of Rebecca Ames Photography.

Traditional flowers such as roses and hydrangeas shared the stage with garden flowers grown at Springwell, such as fragrant herbs, dahlias, gomphrena, tuberose, and Queen Ann's Lace. Textural elements such as lamb's ear, curly willow, and seeded eucalyptus were woven together with rich dark green Star Jasmine vine, and delicate Love in a Puff vine.

The feel was romantic and light, from the loose and flowing creations that adorned the arbor (created by Steve and his Dad), to the lanterns mingling among flower filled vessels and vines that swept down the center of the tables.

It was a privilege to create the floral designs for this sweet couple's wedding.
Be sure to check out Rebecca's Wedding Page to see more images from this beautiful wedding. She did an incredible job of capturing the all the elements that go into telling the story of their wedding day.

One of the things we celebrate at weddings is LOVE! So I am always excited when I can add something tangible to the bridal bouquet that is a reminder of Love. For summer and fall weddings that tangible something has been Love In A Puff.
It's a sweet little vine, with a very cute name, and it is a delicate accent that can be used in both the bridal bouquet and as well as other designs.
The balloon puffs look enchanting in the way they dance around the design.
And the smile on a bride's face when she sees what is inside those little puffs is priceless!

The Love-In-Puff vines at Springwell Gardens will continue to produce lots of lovely tendrils and balloon-like puffs until frost. They are slated to make an appearance at several weddings in October.
They are lovely for bouquet work, but they work great in centerpiece designs.
Delicate vines swirling in and around flowers with the  glowing green puffs hovering about.
And what happens when you open up one of those little puffs- It's fun to watch the look on a bride's face when she realizes what she sees- The little black seeds say it all....

Seeds have been sown for late spring blooming plants, and now it's time to start focusing on summer plants.
One that always has a special place at Springwell Gardens is Love-in-a-Puff- cardiospermum halicacabum, (see previous posts from past summers). It's a summer vine with LOTS of delicate tendrils and billowy little puffs that add a lovely rustic
drape and texture to centerpiece and ceremony designs.
But what is really irresistible is using Love-in-a-Puff in bridal bouquets,
for inside each of the puffs are tiny heart impressed seeds
Love-in-a-Puff is available at Springwell Gardens from late May until frost.
I always encourage my brides to save the dried puffs from their bouquets and remove the seeds. They make a romantic little keepsake, or can be planted later to grow your own Love-in-a-Puff vines!

Looking for fragrance in your summer bridal bouquet?... Check out Tuberose.
These glistening white tubular flowers are a favorite for southern gardens. And no wonder... one or two stems can fill a room with the most wonderful fragrance.!
Not only do they smell great, they are also a lovely to look at. Tuberose have a sweet cottage garden appeal that is perfect for informal bouquets such as this one of soft coral dahlias and garden roses
and another one designed with zinnias, feather celosia, blue salvia and Love-In-A-Puff.
Last year was the first year for growing them at Springwell Gardens, and I have to say I was charmed! So they will definitely be back this summer as well, both in the garden, and in a few bridal bouquets too!

Each year it's exciting to try something new in the garden. This years "new starts" included ranunculus and leucojum in the spring as well as poppies and delphinium. And for the summer I've added Pincushion Flower (Sweet Scabiosa) and Lisianthus.
These are not new types of flowers- they're just newbies to my garden beds.
The design above includes both pink and very dark maroon pincushion flowers (Summer Fruits and Black Knight Scabiosa), Pink Champagne Lisianthus, Love-in-a-Puff vine, Pink Zinnias and  dark leaves of Perilla. Love how the bright pinks play beautifully off the darker notes of the Black Knight Scabiosa and Perilla.
